Two quick words of caution:

  1. Archival documents often contain terms, phrases, and biases that reduce, minimize, or alter Native identities and views of the world.
  2. This project is not “complete” — numbers shown represent only what has been entered into this database, not the total number of Natives who were enslaved or unfree in any given area.

Eunice Rocker’s Story in Its Historical Context

In this video, Patricia Rocker (Chappaquiddick Wampanoag, Whale Clan) discusses Eunice Rocker’s story and its place in the larger context of Indigenous slavery and U.S. history.

Correction: Eunice Matthews Rocker was arrested in 1883, rather than 1846 as stated in the account. The aggression in Edgartown to force BIPOC residents out of the town started shortly after the 1846 Dread Scott decision.
